What We Do

Here at R.S. Coleman Lumber Company we produce an estimated 10 million board feet of green Virginia hardwoods annually for the railroad tie, pallet, concentration yards and end users.  We specialize in Kiln dried Poplar (Tulipwood) lumber in the U.S. as well as exports to China, Italy, and other countries worldwide.  We also offer double shredded hardwood mulch and sawdust.

Our main production is Yellow Poplar, Red Oak, White Oak and lesser volumes in Ash, Hickory, Soft Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Gum, and Beech.  From these species we produce graded, rough sawn green lumber, ranging in thickness from 4/4 to 8/4.

Why Buy from Coleman Lumber

Thanks to our concentrated company size of less than forty employees and our single sawmill facility we produce strikingly consistent hardwood lumber, both in thickness and quality.  Located in an area known for its Poplar, 60% of our production includes this species.  This allows us to have a narrow focus on Kiln Dried Poplar for domestic markets and export markets.  Lastly, as a family owned and operated business for over 70 years, we stay hands on with operations.  We know that consistent, quality shipments and customer focused service are the reasons for our continued success.

How Our Process Works

After the trees are harvested in Virginia, they are trucked to our lumber yard in Orange County.  Here, all logs are measured, graded and sorted by each species.  A HMC debarker is used to start the process, a 6′ McDonough head rig is used to square the logs up on a Corley carriage with a 3-D scanner before being sent to a 6′ McDonough Linebar Resaw.  A HMC trim saw is used to cut the boards to the appropriate lengths.  From here, all lumber is graded and stacked for either shipment or to be dried in the kiln.

Our History In Brief

Since the 1940s the R.S. Coleman Lumber Company has been producing top quality lumber and hardwoods, especially Poplar (Tulipwood). Founded in Culpeper, Virginia by Robert Coleman, Sr. after World War II, our family owned and operated business has grown to nearly 40 employees. During the 1950s during an economic slump in the industry, our operations moved about 10 miles south to Orange County for a short time, before returning home to Culpeper. In the early 1970s, we stopped producing pine and narrowed our focus specifically on Virginia hardwoods. Led today by the 3rd generation of our family business, we continue to invest in quality, trustworthy staff, top-grade equipment and modern technology to carry us into the future. By keeping our focus narrow and our operations in one location, we will continue to provide consistent, quality hardwood lumber.
